How Free Coverage Works
When we see the word “free,” we often think it must be too good to be true. However, healthcare is a basic human right, and some options will allow anyone to have healthcare coverage at a price they can afford.
How Does Free Coverage Work?
The Affordable Care Act (ACA), often called Obamacare, was enacted in 2010 to increase access to affordable health coverage for individuals and families in the United States. It introduced various provisions and reforms to improve the healthcare system and make insurance more accessible.
One of the ACA’s key features is providing financial assistance to individuals and families with low to moderate incomes. The ACA offers premium tax credits, reducing monthly premium costs for eligible individuals and families. These subsidies are designed to make insurance premiums more affordable based on income and family size.
The ACA established Health Insurance Marketplaces, or Exchanges, where individuals and families can shop for and purchase health insurance plans. These Marketplaces serve as a centralized platform for comparing plans based on costs, coverage, and benefits. The ACA mandates that all health insurance plans offered through the Marketplace must cover a set of essential health benefits. These benefits include preventive care, prescription drugs, maternity care, mental health services, and more. This ensures that individuals and families receive comprehensive coverage.
By implementing these provisions, the Affordable Care Act aims to make health coverage more accessible and affordable for individuals and families across different income levels. It has significantly reduced the uninsured rate and improved healthcare access for millions of Americans.

Coverage outside of Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment typically runs from November 1st to January 15th in most states. However, there are alternatives for obtaining coverage outside of these dates through qualifying life events. These events include loss of coverage, marriage or divorce, the birth of a child, and loss of Medicaid eligibility, among others. Don’t hesitate to explore your options outside of the Open Enrollment period.
